The horizons of tape drone music significantly expanded in recent years and became separated into many sub-styles. At first, released on the Small Doses, this record of well-known among tape pshychedelia lovers hellene Panos Alexiadis belongs to the so-called synth-drone, what obviously says about sources of his music. While most of the performers in this style are focusing on lingering arpeggios and psychedelic collages, layered one on another, Alexiadis stands on the well-grounded drone-foundation, building a giant structures on it. They look quite futuristic and resemble the images of classic American science fiction books - Asimov, Clarke or Simak. Graceful steeples made of shiny plastic, rushing up to the stars.
Given the age of these books, I even don't know - to consider this kind of music as some retro or still regard it as the soundtrack to the landscapes of really possible future. However, geometrically correct and graceful curves of the music, at the same time, do not give us much time to reflect on their form, because of their purpose - to send living creatures up to the stars, and they are very good in it. What is interesting, is the fact that if you give this music to take you away to where it aspires (and where derives), turns out that it isn't infinity of space or the cold vacuum and hostile landscape of some Saturn's moon awaits us there. In the Alexiadis's cosmos person reincarnates and throws away his physical form, just like a rocket separates wasted stages. Pure energy, thought, flying faster than photons - here's a bright future, which this music foretells us. And yet album's name reminds some sort of marijuana, role of mind-altering substances here - is obvious allegory. Music affects stronger than any drug, being a meditation itself, a story and a living structure.
Unfortunately, Panos has recently announced closure of the project, but he's not finished his musical activity. So, let's expect new achievements in his art of making science fiction and truly meditative music at the same time.
